Poem

Guernika is burning, aflame!
At night, high Vizcaya appeared to us
buried in blood,
and among the stones we had
a village on live coals.

Hard to belive, I have arrived
at Gernika in the middle of the night:
the village is burning, aflame!
Children sleep on the roads.
The brother looks for his brother
and the father finds his murdered son!
Cows bellow in the wilderness...
A woman with no tears in her eyes.

Listen, listen to the noise of the flames.
The blood-teardrop looks like lightning,
but the invader fights for nothing:
the tree resists, standing with its arms wide open.
If Gernika belonged to us,
now the earth has what belonged to her.
Gernika has united
in the name of freedom!...
